What does NAMI do and what is its mission?
NAMI is the nation’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of individuals with mental health conditions through the following:
- NAMI offers mental health education and outreach programs serving families, individuals and educators, nationally and through the local community. Your local NAMI Affiliate or NAMI State Organization can help you register for NAMI programs or find resources in your community. NAMI groups and courses are free to join, and membership is not required to attend. To find your nearest NAMI Affiliate, click on your state through the Find Your Local NAMI
- NAMI advocates at the Federal and State and local levels to shape public policy for people living with mental health conditions. (We do not offer individual advocacy services.)
- Our NAMI HelpLine allows us to respond personally to thousands of requests for mental health information and resource referral, yearly. As important, we operate a national network of Affiliates throughout the nation that provide education and support within the community. NAMI Affiliates also offer free support groups to those living with mental health conditions and to their friends and loved ones.
- NAMI sponsors public awareness events and activities, including Mental Health Month and NAMIWalks, to successfully fight Stigma and encourage understanding.
