How do I file a complaint against my psychiatrist/psychotherapist?
We’re sorry to hear you’ve had a negative experience with a mental health professional. If you are receiving care at a publicly funded community mental health agency, you may wish to ask about the complaint process at that specific agency and request to see a different provider.
To register a complaint against a specific mental health professional, you will want to contact the licensing authority for the state in which they practice. Each type of mental health professional (psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists) report to a different professional licensing board in their state. The process for filing the complaint may differ by state and type of professional.
To find the right licensing board and information for filing a complaint, you can search online “licensing board [type of professional] [state]” or “file a complaint [type of professional] [state]. For example, “licensing board psychologist Minnesota” or “file a complaint social worker Texas.”
